The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s

NJ Connect Apartments at St Elizabeth NJ

The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s
176 Hussa Street
Linden, NJ 07036

The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s was formerly a vacant convent that was rehabbed to create 11 apartments for physically disabled adults, including one apartment for a resident manager. The project includes 8 one bedroom units and 3 two bedroom units.

The convent is a three-story, brick building with a footprint of approximately 15,000 square feet. The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s was completed through a partnership with The Domus Corporation (Domus). Domus is the housing development arm of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark.

As with Freeman Apartments, the funding stream for this project draws from sources at every level of government. Capital funding was provided by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of a Section 811 grant ($1,977.200), by the County of Union through its HOME Program ($425,232), by the HMFA Special Needs Trust Fund ($986,095) and by the Federal Home Loan Bank ($145,693).

The apartments are fully accessible for individuals with mobility impairments and feature 36-inch wide doors and bathrooms with grab bars and roll-in showers. The kitchens include side-by- side refrigerators and range tops with front-mounted controls.

The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s is a residence for people of low and moderate income, 18 years of age or older, with a permanent physical disability, who are capable of directing their own care and who wish to live independently in the community.

The three story building has an elevator to provide full access to all units for people with physical disabilities. Safety features include a sprinkler system throughout the building.

The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s is conveniently located a short distance from the North Wood Avenue business district, NJ Transit Bus Line, and the Linden Train Station.

Construction was completed in 2011. Prior to the development of The Apartments at St. Elizabeth’s, Freeman Apartments was the only affordable housing project in Union County developed exclusively for people with physically disabilities.
